Italy is the sense of beauty. PlaceItaly includes some of the most varied and scenic landscapes on Earth and is often described as a boot-shaped country. At its broad summit are the Alps, which are among the most rugged mountains in the world. The highest points in Italy are Monte Rosa and along Mont Blanc. The western Alps overlook a landscape of alpine lakes and valleys sculpted by glaciers that extend to the Po river and Piedmont. Tuscany, south of the Cisalpine region, is perhaps the best known region in the country. From the central Alps, which runs along the length of the country, the high Apennine chain radiates, which widens near Rome to cover almost the entire width of the Italian peninsula. To the south of Rome the Apennines narrow and are flanked by two large coastal plains, one overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and the other on the Adriatic Sea. Much of the lower Apennine chain is almost wild, home to a wide range of species rarely seen elsewhere in Western Europe, such as wild boar, wolves, monkeys and bears. Even the southern Apennines are tectonically unstable, with numerous active volcanoes, including Vesuvius, which occasionally erupts ash and steam in the air above Naples and its bay dotted with islands. In the lower part of the country, in the Mediterranean Sea, there are the islands of Sicily and Sardinia.Click here for a map.
