The ancient village of the city of Grottammare is located on a hill from which the modern city dominates. The Castle of Grottammare was built in the 10th century, of the old castle which was on top of the hill, few tracts of walls and the bases of the towers remain, immersed in a lush pine forest. The castle was accessed through three doors: Porta Marina (not far from the "Torrione della Battaglia") to the east, Porta Castello to the north and Porta Maggiore to the south.
